Counselling

What is Counselling?

Counselling and psychotherapy are terms which include a range of talking therapies which can help with thoughts and feelings stemming from challenging events in our lives, such as traumatic events, struggles in the workplace or family issues. Sometimes these difficult thoughts and feelings may not even spring from painful circumstances, but are more general feelings, perhaps of sadness, anxiety or feeling completely stuck. Building a relationship of trust with you is at the heart of my practice so that you are able to express openly and in your own time, whatever you may bring to your sessions.

How counselling differs from talking to friends or family

Talking to friends or family about what's on your mind might bring about worries of being judged, or feelings of embarrassment or wanting to cheer you up. They may offer advice which doesn't quite fit, a little like trying on someone else's clothes – they may be the same size, but it doesn't seem to sit right! Talking to a counsellor offers a confidential and boundaried space where you can explore your concerns without having to worry about protecting the other person. In your sessions, I will not try to 'fix' you; instead, I will support you in coming to a better understanding of yourself and finding the way forward. I will help you identify unhelpful behaviours, explore new ways of thinking and help you build a platform from which more positive choices can be made.

How Counselling Works

It is helpful to have counselling sessions at regular intervals, usually once a week, and the number of sessions will depend upon your individual needs. I recognise that for some clients, work commitments may mean that flexibility around appointments is useful and I am able to offer early morning or evening sessions to help with this. Sessions are face to face, although I also offer telephone appointments for clients who are more comfortable with this.
